Materiality and the Meaning of Musical Instruments

A 4-day international conference at the University of Oxford

Thursday 27 June – Sunday 30 June 2024

The conference runs for four days, from Thursday 27th June to Sunday 30th June 2024. The theme of ‘materiality’ encompasses instruments, the people who interact with them, and the contexts of their use. We want to explore the stories that surround the physical objects and the entanglement between people and things in different cultures. We aim to provide a platform for discussing the many and varied ways in which societies invest these instruments with meaning, and how these meanings might be drawn from and reflected in their material forms.

On Friday 28th June in the afternoon we are working in partnership with the Musical Instruments Museum, Brussels and look forward to presenting a selection of papers as part of their Mahillon centenary conference, Mahillon and his Time.
